Home : Recipes : Bread : Irish Bannock Bread Recipe

In our opinion, the best way to indulge in some Irish Bannock Bread is to toast it and serve with plenty of butter and jam, and of course some gourmet Irish tea!

Recipe Ingredients

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup Dried Currants
  • 2 tbl Butter
  • 2 tbl Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/2 tsp Baking Powder

How To Make

  1. Mix the sugar, butter, baking soda, salt, baking powder and flour together thoroughly. Start to mix in the buttermilk until it reaches a soft doughy consistency, then add the currants.
  2. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured rolling board and knead into a smooth circle about 6 in diameter.
  3. Place on some greased baking paper. With a knife, cut several diagonal cross on the top about 1/2 in deep.
  4. Place in a preheated oven at 350 F for about 45 minutes.
  5. Enjoy!
