Thick and wholesome, the English Saffron Bread has a lovely chewy consistency that is gorgeous when toasted!
Recipe Ingredients
- 6 cups Flour
- 1 1/2 cups Milk
- 1 cup Butter
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 1/2 cup Water
- 2 Large Eggs
- 2 tbl Cinnamon
- 2 tbl Lemon Zest
- 2 tsp Saffron
- 2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Ground Nutmeg

How To Make
- Heat up the milk in a saucepan and add the butter, salt and sugar. Stir well until mixed thoroughly.
- With a small bowl, soak the saffron in hot water and let cool gradually.
- Using a large sized bowl, add the saffron to the mixture of milk and ingredients prepared before. Then add the lemon zest, cinnamon and nutmeg together with the flour and mix well.
- Turn the mixture out onto a flat surface and knead until a doughy circle.
- Take a good handful of the mixture and roll in a bowl to cover it with oil. Let it sit for about an hour to rise.
- Put the dough onto a floured surface and divide up into 3 equally proportioned pieces, then roll each piece into a thick string.
- Weave the strings together and then place on greaseproof paper. Let it sit to rise for 45 minutes, or thereabouts.
- Bake in a preheated over for approximately an hour at 350 F.
- Serve alongside your afternoon tea!
