Thick and wholesome, the English Saffron Bread has a lovely chewy consistency that is gorgeous when toasted!

Recipe Ingredients

  • 6 cups Flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Milk
  • 1 cup Butter
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 2 tbl Cinnamon
  • 2 tbl Lemon Zest
  • 2 tsp Saffron
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Nutmeg

How To Make

  1. Heat up the milk in a saucepan and add the butter, salt and sugar. Stir well until mixed thoroughly.
  2. With a small bowl, soak the saffron in hot water and let cool gradually.
  3. Using a large sized bowl, add the saffron to the mixture of milk and ingredients prepared before. Then add the lemon zest, cinnamon and nutmeg together with the flour and mix well.
  4. Turn the mixture out onto a flat surface and knead until a doughy circle.
  5. Take a good handful of the mixture and roll in a bowl to cover it with oil. Let it sit for about an hour to rise.
  6. Put the dough onto a floured surface and divide up into 3 equally proportioned pieces, then roll each piece into a thick string.
  7. Weave the strings together and then place on greaseproof paper. Let it sit to rise for 45 minutes, or thereabouts.
  8. Bake in a preheated over for approximately an hour at 350 F.
  9. Serve alongside your afternoon tea!
