English Brown Bread is a traditional favourite recipe in England. In it full bodied and very filling. Ideal with cheese and a spreading of pickle. Treat yourself and try out this brilliant English Brown Bread recipe!

Recipe Ingredients

  • 5 cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 4 cups Water
  • 2 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 2 cups Bran
  • 1/2 cup Shortening Liquid
  • 1 tbl Salt
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • Dry Yeast

How To Make

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine together the white and brown flours, bran, salt and shortening.
  2. Take a separate bowl and cream the sugar and yeast.
  3. Make a well in the flour mixture and then add the yeast, then mix until a soft dough.
  4. Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured flat surface and knead until slightly thicker.
  5. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it. Then leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
  6. When the dough has risen, take it out of the bowl and knead again on a lightly floured surface.
  7. Place the dough into a large bread tin, then let it rise for a while until it reaches the top.
  8. You can sprinkle the top with seeds / nuts if you desire.
  9. Bake the bread in a preheated oven at 400 F for roughly an hour.
