Dunluce Castle sits perilously perched at the edge of a steep and rather tall cliff. It commands magnificent views over the north Antrim coast and Donegal in the distance. Beautiful limestone cliffs stretch from it's western side towards Whiterocks beach, with the seaside town of Portrush in the distance.
Historians believe that the castle was originally built by Richard de Burgh, or one of his chiefs, during the Anglo Norman period. Dunluce Castle has seen many additions over the centuries, but fell into disuse in the 1600's when Randall MacDonnell (the 2nd Earl of Antrim) moved to Ballymagarry House. It is said that during a violent storm the waves lashed the base of the cliffs underneath the castle, causing the rear kitchen to collapse and fall into the ocean below.
Dunluce Castle has spectacular views of Scotland, and on a good day it is possible to see the many small islands that dot the Scottish coast. If you are in Northern Ireland, then you really must take some time and visit this ancient castle.
