Tea Arrives in Russia
Home : Articles : The History of Tea : Tea Arrives in Russia

The Russians quickly developed a love for tea, possibly spurred on by their geographic connections. While the European and British traders had to navigate some of the toughest oceans to get their tea home, the Russians had to scale mountains and endure fiercely challenging weather conditions.

Camels were the only way to get the large volumes of tea needed across the Asian continent and into Russia. The growing demand for tea was reflected in the long lines of camel trains. Sometimes these trains were made up of several hundred camels, all carrying a load of tea that was destined for the Russian markets.

Trans-Siberian Railway Opened

With the opening of the world famous Trans-Siberian Railway, a 6000 mile long stretch of continuous track, camels were made redundant. However, the history of the camel trains running from China to Russia lives on today in the blend of Chinese black tea known as "Russian Caravan".
