Tea Arrives in Europe
Home : Articles : The History of Tea : Tea Arrives in Europe

It wasn't until the 1600's that tea appeared in Europe, however, it did not become commonly drunk until much later. Tea was brought back from China by Dutch and Portuguese traders, making it a very expensive luxury afforded only by the very highest of society. Another reason for tea failing to become an instant success in Europe was the fact that the aristocrats preferred the taste of tea, while it took the English until 1652 before they even began to start trading for tea.
