It's a known fact - tea is good for you. One of the elements that make tea so healthy is known as an antioxidant. Oxidation is the name of a normal process that continually occurs in the body. This process causes damage to the cells, and it's the cumulative results of oxidation that are believed to cause ageing and lead to death. The oxidation is a result of the body's regular metabolism, but is accelerated by pollution, sunlight and smoking. Free radicals are charged atoms, or pieces of molecule. A free radical attempts to stabilize itself by stealing an electron from it's surroundings, which means that it will usually procure the electron from a nearby healthy cell. The end result of this is a little damage to DNA or a dysfunctional protein. The good news is that an antioxidant freely gives up their own electrons to the free radicals, reducing the level of cellular damage. When an antioxidant gives up an electron they are no longer able to function as an antioxidant. Therefore, you should be constantly replenishing your levels of antioxidants. You can top up your levels of antioxidants with vitamin C and E, selenium, beta-carotine, fruits, vegetables, meats and nuts. Phenols, the specific kind of antioxidant found in tea, is also found in grapes and berries. |
